External Skin Applications

Types of External Skin Applications

Ointment
Ointment is an oil based preparation applied onto skin. It is a little greasy but less irritable and very effective
Cream
Cream is less greasy, more comfortable, but more irritable to skin than ointment.
Lotion
It is usually applied to head or areas where ointment and cream are inappropriate for application. It is more irritable and less effective than ointment and cream. Well shaking the lotion before each use!

How to Use External Skin Applications

  1. Types and weak/strong medications should be chosen based on symptoms and the affected area.
  2. The frequency of use depends on symptoms.
  3. Clean your hands and the affected area before use. After bath and before use, pat the area dry with a towel and make sure the skin is completely dry.
  4. Only apply to the affected area.
  5. Do not touch the medication with dirty finger that has touched the affected skin, the medication may be contaminated. Use other clean finger or first put some on a piece of gauze to use.
  6. Wash the hands after use.

Humectant

White Vaseline＋Sahne Ointment ) / White Vaseline
White Vaseline: To form an oil layer on the skin, slow evaporation of the skin’s moisture, and protect skin from dryness. Sahne Ointment: contain vitamin A. It strengthens skin metabolism,protects skin from dryness, and softens the horny layer.
Hirudoid Soft (lotion)
It is a substance similar to heparin, and protects skin from dryness.
★ Do not use on the wounds. Hirudoid can inhibit blood coagulation.
Administration
Use it after cleaning the skin, 1-3 times daily based on symptoms. If the itch is strong, use lotion first, and then spread eczema medications on the top.

Eczema Medications（Non-Steroid-Type）

Anderm Cream／Staderm Ointment:To soften the pain and swelling that are caused by skin inflammation.

Staderm Ointment＋Eurax Ointment＋Restamin Ointment
Eurax ointment: Relieving itch.Restamin ointment: Antihistamine medication. Relieving itch.
Administration
Apply to strong itching area and the itch-scratch. If symptoms are mild, use 1-2 times daily, if moderate, use 1-3 times a day.

Eczema Medications（Weak Steroid）

Sahne＋Beclacin Ointment / Almeta Ointment / Neo-Medrol EE Ointment
Beclacin／Almeta Ointment
reduce inflammation, itch, pain and swelling.
Neo-Medrol EE ointment
Apply to the outside of eyes and infants' faces. No need to worry even it gets into the eyes.
Administration
Apply to the red and strong itching and itch-scratch area. It will be more effective that uses small amount to the top of lotion and non-steroid eczema medications. It can be used on face 1-2 times daily.

Eczema Medications（Moderate Steroid）

Beclacin Ointment／Rinderon-VG
Rinderon-VG
reduce skin inflammation, itch, pain and swellings.
Administration
It is used in severe eczema. Applying small amount to the top of lotion and non-steroid eczema medications will be more effective. 　Do not apply to face!

Other Medications

Protopic ointment 0.1％（for adult）／Protopic ointment 0.03％（for children）
  • Use in atopic dermatitis
  • Protopic (Tacrolimus) inhibits skin immune response and reduce inflammation.
  • Cause less systemic side effects because it is hardly absorbed by skin. And it has no rebound symptoms after stopping the medication.
  • Effective to the eczema occurring on the thin skins, such as face and nick.
Precautions
  • Do not apply to wet area, acne and folliculitis, oral and nasal mucosas, and the private parts
  • Apply the prescribed amount１to２times daily, for instance:
    2 - 5 years old {under 20kg }：1g
    6 - 12 years old {20kg～50kg }：2 - 4g
    Over 13 years old {over 50kg}： 5g
  • If you use 2 times daily, an interval of 12 hours is needed.
  • Do not use during pregnancy and lactation.
  • The irritations of itching, burning, and sting may occur. They usually last for 2 to 3 days, but some may be 1 week.
  • Avoid it getting into eyes. If it happens, wash it immediately.
  • If symptoms are not improved after 2 weeks, stop using and check with your doctor.
Side Effects
See your doctor as soon as possible if acne, folliculitis, blisters, and/or rashes occurs

Urepearl

Containing 10% urea.It protects skin from dryness by binding moisture in the skin.It is more effective after you take a bath.

Keratinamine

Containing 20% urea.It is an effective moisturizing cream, especially for calloused skin. It is not applicable to wounds and mucosa because of its irritation.

Anderm Cream＋Beclacin Cream

Use in prickly heat, eczema, and rash etc. When symptoms are alleviated, switch to anderm cream only or other weaker medications.
On Side Effects of Steroids
  1. Cause redness and thin skin.
  2. Cause acne, angular cheilitis, and folliculitis etc.
  3. Increase hair growth especially on the face and body.
  4. May cause an infection of bacterial or fungal disease.
Some people may be scared to use steroids because of the side effects. However, steroid would not be a dangerous medicine if you follow your doctor’s instructions, have regular check-ups, use correct medication and proper administration.
