Theophylline

Theophylline is one of the common medicines used to treat bronchial asthma. Recently, however, this drug is no longer recommended for use in the following conditions:

  1. have history of convulsion
  2. having fever
  3. infants

Theophylline may easily cause convulsion in these cases. And, it is also recommended to avoid using theophylline for long-term control of asthma.

Theophylline

  1. Effects・・・To inhibit the contraction of bronchi, reduce mucosal edema, relax the airways, and ease breath. Therefore, theophylline is also called bronchodilators.
  2. Side Effects・・・Side effects may be rash and itchy, headaches, dizziness, vomiting, upset stomach, diarrhea, and less common convulsions and confusion or change in behavior.
  3. Constituent・・・Theophylline is a purine derivative and an active constituent of tea (Camellia sinensis) of theaceae. It is chemically related to caffeine, having the effects of cardiotonic, renal blood vessels expansion, diuresis, and central nervous system excitation.
